Getting a Toddler to Sleep in Their Bed

!±8± Getting a Toddler to Sleep in Their Bed

Many toddlers have a really hard time staying in their bedroom and sleeping in their own beds. Some are afraid to be in their bed by themselves while others just want more time with mommy and daddy. Either way it is something that they will have to grow out of and there are some techniques to help them do so.

The first thing that you will have to do is understand why they want to sleep with you. Ask them why they want to sleep in your bed and not their own. If they don't give an answer try to watch for anything that triggers them wanting to sleep with you.

Many times giving your toddler a blanket or a bear to sleep with will go a long way to making them feel better. They will get just as much security from an inanimate object as they will from you once they associate it with safety.

Having a consistent bed time will go a long way in helping your child to fall asleep. They will associate that time with sleeping and will be less likely to stay awake and to roam around the house.

Encourage them to stay in their bed by offering rewards. Start out with small rewards like a sticker or a piece of candy for each night that they stay in bed. You can supplement these smaller rewards with a toy or something larger for an entire week of sleeping in their own bed. Rewards go far when trying to teach a toddler just about anything and it will work much better than discipline.

Gradually wean them off of their need to be with you for every second of the night. If they are laying in bed screaming and crying only go to see them every couple minutes. If they keep it up add more time between all of your intervals. Eventually they are going to give up and go to sleep.

Don't give them attention when they crawl in to bed with you. Often toddlers are looking for attention from their parents and by talking to them or yelling at them you are giving it up. Toddlers thrive on attention good or bad. It is best to stay completely silent and to simply carry them back to their bed and leave. Do this as often as you have to. Eventually they are going to go to sleep.

Adding boundaries to a bed can help with teaching a toddler to stay there. Put up a set of rails or bars on the outside of the bed. Make sure that there is still enough space for them to get up if they need to (they aren't prisoners) but set the rails up to cover the majority of the bed. This will help them realize that they aren't free to roam.

Once your child learns to sleep on their own they will be better off and so will you. Try out some of these tips and get ready to have more peace and quiet during your night.

Wine Cellar Cooling Styles and Sizes - Choosing the Right Fit

!±8± Wine Cellar Cooling Styles and Sizes - Choosing the Right Fit

Wine cellar cooling units are air conditioners specifically designed to operate at an ideal cellar temperature, usually 55 - 57 degrees. As with other air conditioners, these systems must provide an evaporator coil to cool the air and condense moisture inside the cellar and a condenser coil which uses a compressor to remove the heat coming out of the room.

Wine cellar cooling systems come in many different sizes and shapes, but they all fall into one of the three categories. Here is an overview of your choices.

1. Through-the-Wall Design

One of the most popular, reliable and least expensive styles used in private cellars is a "through-the-wall" configuration, in which a self-contained air conditioning unit is mounted literally through the wall. These units are best for smaller cellars as they have a limited cooling capacity. Thought must be given to the best placement of these units, so as not to interfere with the racking. The condenser side of the unit is outside of the cellar, and generates some heat and noise, another factor to be taken into account when determining the location. A room air conditioner is NOT an alternative to purchasing an air conditioner specifically designed for use in a wine cellar from a reliable manufacturer.

2. Ducted System

A versatile style available from some manufacturers is a self-contained ducted unit which offers maximum flexibility in design and installation, and has the cooling capacity to be used in any size cellar. A grille on the inside wall is connected by insulated flexible ductwork to a self-contained unit outside of the cellar which contains the evaporator, fan and condenser. This unit can be placed in any indoor, out-of-the-way location outside the cellar. The result is a quiet cellar with literally no obtrusive equipment taking up space. This system is ideal for private, larger cellars or commercial use, as it can be sized for any cellar capacity.

3. Split System

Available from some manufacturers is a split system comprised of two separate mechanical elements (condenser and evaporator) that can be used when ducting is not feasible, especially when the condenser must be installed outdoors or in an unheated space, such as a garage. Split systems have the evaporator fan mounted inside the wine cellar with the condenser located outside the room and connected to the cellar by refrigeration tubing. Unlike the first two styles, the split system must be installed by licensed electrical and refrigeration technicians. Locating the condenser outside can be problematic, as it must be able to hold its set-point in both summer and winter temperatures. These may also be a noise factor inside the room due to the type of evaporate used. The split system can be sized for any size cellar.

Correctly Sizing Your Unit

Counting the number of bottles or adding up the cubic footage of the cellars is a first step but not really sufficient information to select the size, type or capacity of the wine cooling unit. These are important facts but only two parameters that enter into the calculations for proper selection. A trained technician from a reputable manufacturer or distributor will take into account the amount of insulation available, the temperature of the surrounding spaces, the cellar's location in the building, frequency of door openings, frequency of wine turnover, lighting intensity and duration, size and insulation of doors and windows, and any other variable present in the cellar's environment.

    The Importance of Air Conditioning

!±8± The Importance of Air Conditioning

The summers here in Calgary are gorgeous. Blue skies with those little cotton candy clouds, the horizon endless to the east and bordered by the Rocky Mountains to the west, being in Calgary for an Alberta summer is a great experience. The nights out here in the Prairies are actually quite cool, sometimes going right down to around 5 degrees (Celsius obviously, we are after all in Canada). This is actually a good thing because the days are scorching hot, especially when there's a heat wave.

Like most of the buildings in Downtown Calgary, ours was built in the 1970s. At the time the city was undergoing a boom and office buildings were sprouting up like mushrooms after a rain. Now, maybe there is something to that whole 'Global Warming' thing and the city was a lot colder back then, or maybe it was just too expensive at the time, but our building and most, if not all, of the rest of 1970s-era Calgary was built without Air Conditioning. There are a lot of things produced by the 1970s that defy logic, and I've given up trying to find the reasoning behind denying your tenants the option to cool off in the summer. What was important in all of this is that in the first summer of its operation Nuvo did not have A/C and we were losing business because of it.

In these days of online booking a good percentage of our guests were making their reservations with us through Expedia, Travelocity and the like and because of this they never really got to take a good look at our hotel before they committed to staying here. As a result we took on a lot of guests who had no idea that they had just booked into a hotel that was not equipped with air conditioning during what turned out to be a near legendary heat wave. I just want to take a second here to point out that when I say 'near legendary' I am not making use of hyperbole, the heat wave that hit Alberta in July nearly crippled the agricultural industry. Fun stuff.

Our original plan for dealing with the A/C was to shop around and get the best price possible, then find a quiet week somewhere and install them all. The flaw with this plan was that it depended on us having plenty of time to pick a unit based on its price, aesthetics and efficiency. Unfortunately, we were getting complaints as early as the first week of July and walkouts barely a week later. So, instead of leisurely ordering some units and having them sent over on the slow boat from Korea, we ended up scrambling to acquire enough serviceable units from the local hardware stores. After a week or so of frenzied buying, returning and installing we now have two different styles of A/C units[1, 2] spread out over the different rooms of the hotel and the average temperature level in our rooms has gone from sweltering hot to refrigerator cold.

As it turned out, getting a number of different A/C units actually worked out better than obtaining one uniform style. None of the rooms in Nuvo are exactly alike, the layouts are similar sure, but each room has different furniture and decorations than the next. Having a varied style of A/C appliances doesn't break that motif, and since the units we eventually obtained are portable we can remove or add them at the behest of our guests. We can also take them out during the other eight months of the year when Calgary becomes a city-sized Popsicle, thus reducing both our carbon footprint and our electricity bill.

P.S. Two days after we installed the A/C the heat wave broke and Calgary got more rain in three days than it did in the last three months. Air Conditioning was no longer an issue.

    How to Stop Snoring Now

!±8± How to Stop Snoring Now

If you have a loved one that snores, you understand the sheer annoyance of the loud, nasally sounds that wakes you up from a sound sleep or prevents you from falling asleep at all. Relief is in sight, there are ways you can actually prevent snoring by simple, homemade remedies.

The first thing that someone should try is super simple, and I guarantee everyone has this in their pantry. Salt. That is right, just plain and simple salt. Run yourself a glass of comfortably warm water. This moistens the mucus membranes in your throat which will reduce and reduce vibration in your throat. Another remedy is actually using olive oil. Right before bed take a couple of sips of olive oil, this helps quiet the snoring sound even if it does not completely cure it.

Keep your bedroom, pillows, sheets and comforter clean and allergen free. Allergens irritate your throat and cause snoring. The simple solution is to keep the area you sleep in as clean as possible, which includes changing sheets on a regular basis, as well as drapes.

Another easy way is to add a pillow underneath your head, that might correct your airway. Or, if you sleep with two pillows, try to subtract one and see if that helps with the flow. Make sure when you are buying a new mattress, you pick one that is firm enough to support your body. It is suggested firmness actually helps hold your body in the proper position, making it easier to breath clearly.

Do not eat dairy products directly for bed, because they cause mucus in your throat and your mouth, which leads to snoring. Losing a few pounds actually helps, it makes for less weight pressing down on your chest and your throat, which should encourage less snoring.

If all else fails, right before bed make yourself a nice warm cup of tea, add some honey. This will help lubricate your throat and open your throat, making it easier to breath. My final suggestion is, boil some water in a teapot. Carefully place it in a bowl and learn forward so that you are inhaling the steam. Place a towel over your head to tent yourself, literally trapping the steam inside, it acts like a humidifier without the hefty price tag.

How to Choose an Ultrasonic Humidifier?

!±8± How to Choose an Ultrasonic Humidifier?

If you have ever experienced the problem of dry skin and chapped lips then you understand the impact that low humidity can have on the body. But did you know that low humidity can also cause furnishings to dry out causing warping, cracking and splitting. You might even find your wallpaper peeling off the wall.

A humidifier is essentially a device that you can use in your home to fight all these problems. It is also beneficial for asthma sufferers, those who suffer from sinus headaches and anyone experiencing air borne allergies. So in all, we can probably agree that a humidifier is a great addition in the home.

Ultrasonic humidifiers are just one of the many different types of humidifiers available but are considered to be one of the best as they have many advantages over other forms of humidifiers. Some of these advantages are as follows:

Ultrasonic humidifiers are generally whisper quiet making them ideal for bedrooms. They can produce a warm or cool fog making them safe to use especially when compared to steam humidifiers which produce steam. These types of humidifiers use little energy which reduces energy costs.
When deciding on which is the best ultrasonic humidifier consider the following:

Choose a humidifier that has a form of anti-bacterial system or device. Humidifiers have a tendency to create mold and bacteria as water is stored in them. Ultrasonic humidifiers can spread white dust around your room so look for one that has a demineralization cartridge. This will prevent the white dust from forming and also prevent lime calcification. Choose a unit that automatically recognizes the humidity in the room and turns on and off automatically in response to your settings. Look for a humidifier that has virtually no sound. This will make it easier to sleep at night if you use the humidifier in a bedroom. Check out the amount of room that the humidifier covers. There's no point buying a humidifier that only covers a 400 sq ft area if your room is 600 sq ft. Try to buy a humidifier whose coverage is slightly more than the room you will be using it in. Some humidifiers take a lot of effort to maintain with regular changing of wicks and pads. Look for one that emphasizes low maintenance.
